The first book featured in this exhibition is Reflections of Arcata’s History by Susie Van Kirk. Van Kirk's book focuses on the history of Arcata’s architectural style. She divides her book into four architectural time periods; the Settlement period, the Victorian period, the Transitional period, and the Craftsmen period. Each section presenting the major pieces of architecture that signify that time period. Van Kirk includes images of each structure, explanation on its architectural features, and an in-depth history of the structure; including its ownership, construction, and preservation. The following two pages from Van Kirk’s book are being featured in this exhibition, Page 56 and page 150. Page 56 highlights the Kirk House, 860 10th Street; now known has T’s Cafe. Page 56 represents a perfect example of the Victorian period section of this book. An interesting fact about this popular restaurant in Arcata is it that used to be a house in 1876. Page 150, is from the Craftsmen period, The Arcata Theater. This is also a very popular spot in Arcata, especially for HSU students. It is also has a unique architectural style, compared to most of Arcata. This page was chosen to be featured to give a more holistic look at the different architectural styles in Arcata/Eureka.
