Engravings

dictionarium rusticum 4.jpg

This is one of two engravings from the dictionary but is the only folding engraving included in the work. It displays various styles of tack.

These engravings are far more refined in their style. Unfortunately, the engravings are not specifically attributed to any specific artist nor is any artist mentioned in the information given about the book's printing. These are the largest and most detailed images within the text and demonstrate the emphasis on the importance of knowing and understanding the equipment related to horsemanship.

Horses were a key aspect of life for work, liesure, as well as a way to show status in England for centuries. Having these detailed plates regarding varieties of tack in the dictionarium presents examples of the care and attention to this apect of life that was present in 18th century country culture.
