Illustrator: Edmond Vairel
The prints were stenciled and hand colored by Edmond Vairel, a pochoir specialist active in the pre and post WWII era. He produced many works, such as the Jazz series (1947) with Henri Matisse. The same technique was used by many of the most well-known 20th century artists. Its use here may be because pochoir was favored by artists in France during the Art Deco movement, as it produces vivid 3-dimensional colors. Each design was painstakingly composed and colorized in the atelier of the master illustrator. For example of Edmond Vairel's other printed collaborations, see the Jazz series (1947) at LACMA or the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
