wood samples
As you fold open the Book the first section is all 180 wood specimen samples. The samples are on both the front and back of each page. The samples are pasted inbetween a layer of acid free paper and what seems to be a foam core like page. each of these foam core pages are acttached and folded making the chinese like scrool binding.
Next to each samle in both Japanese and English there is a description of that spesific tree. tells the hieght of each tree, the diameter, what the leaves and fruit are like, whether there are flowers, where the tree is found and the use of the wood.
The description next to the sample on the top sample in the picture to the right says (as traslated in english) ," (Briran) The Tree: Evergreen, deciduous, 15m(50ft)in height and 1m(3.3ft)in diameter. The long leaves, smooth and broad ellipse, are stemming out. White flowers bloom in early autumn, fruits turns reddish purple when ripen. sometimes, bog wood of "TABU root" is named "Biran". Growth Range: In Japan, warmer area. The Wood: Light yellowish brown, dense, hard, heavy, (specific gravitg : 0.90) Uses: Furniture, implment, especially fancy grain is utilized as the part of high-class furniture."
As you can see over time the wood has changed color from the description. However, you can see on the thin paper glued to each fold to separate each page and the samples, that the color described is stained. this is proof that the samples were once alive and are real because they still follow natural rules of time.
